In 2006 I started with providing Microcredit facility with free interest to women but this was not sustainable due to high level of default, As many micro credit institutions began to spring up along with the Board of Trustees we decided to focus on capacity building which we call: Building Blocks of Success Series, I also decided that this initiative will form part of Corporate Social Responsibility of my company Dugo.
Turning Lemons To Lemonade Series
No one saw COVID19 coming in 2020 and by the middle of the year, there was despair and frustration with many lives and livelihoods lost. My business was adversely affected because there were no events but bills were piling up. Instead of wallowing in depression I decided to look for those who inspite of the challenges decided to turn adversity to opportunity in different endeavours. The more i interacted with them the more I decided to encourage my self and others with motivational and inspirational quotes. Subsequently I began to look inwards to what I could produce locally and this gave birth to our Stay Safe Essential kits which is creative idea that enabled us to produce our bags and use them to package useful consumables to prevent COVID:19. For the first time in six months we began to make bags .This has led to full production under the label: B.A.S BY DUGO ( Bags Accessories & Souvenirs) which is our proudly made in Nigeria Range of Bags with the mantra “Quality Has No Country Of Origin”.
Talk about turning lemon to lemonades , recently Dugo was selected out of 68,000 women entrepreneurs across Nigeria, Dominican Republic, Jordan and Mongolia for a grant under a pilot initiative by WTO, ITC and NEPC to empower Women Exporters in the Digital Economy ( WEIDE ).
Ndidi Nwuneli’s amazing story on how she and her Team brought transformation to Agribusiness and at the same time impacting lives by providing nutrition to hungry Nigerians was such a story of impact. As i mentioned the topic to Charity Babatunde one of the BOT members of Kingdom Investors, she was so excited that she suggested we should make it a series hence the birth of “Turning Lemons To Lemonades”. It resonates with me because that is actually the story of Kingdom Investors. Turning Your Pain To Gain !!!
Next in this Series is: My Journey To a Healthy Life Style by Yinka Olatubosun who turned her health challenge to business by making healthy food
A thriving ecosystem where women entrepreneurs and young artisans create sustainable livelihoods, preserve African culture, and build lasting businesses.
